NEW YORK -- Mets third baseman David Wright expects to resume baseball activities next month following back surgery last spring.General manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday the Mets captain will report to the teams Florida complex in January, a month or more ahead of spring training. Wright, who turns 34 on Dec. 20, had surgery June 16 to repair a herniated disk in his neck and is in California.Hes simulating baseball activities at this point. Hes still under the thumb of his back doctor, Alderson said at the teams holiday party. So once he gets back to the East Coast and we have better access to him, well ramp him up. I dont think its because he cant. Its just part of the routine. Its not like hes had a setback.Alderson said Wrights activities included running, getting in crouches and moving laterally, but not swinging a bat or even emulating a swing. Wright plans to report to Port St. Lucie, Florida, in early to mid-January.After missing much of 2015 with a strained right hamstring and spinal stenosis, Wright hit .226 this year with seven homers, 14 RBI and 55 strikeouts in 137 at-bats.Noah Syndergaard played Santa -- wearing a blue suit for Mets colors -- at the party for children and was assisted by a pair of teammates as elves, Jose Reyes and Brandon Nimmo.Reyes, who returned to the Mets last summer and played third base in Wrights absence, will get time in the outfield during spring training. He has played one game in the outfield as a professional, at rookie-level Kingsport in 2000.Im ready to do whatever they ask me to do, said Reyes, a four-time All-Star at shortstop. Im looking forward to the experience.New York has not decided whether to give closer Jeurys Familia (Dominican Republic) and infielder Asdrubal Cabrera (Venezuela) permission to play winter ball to prepare for the World Baseball Classic in March. Familia faces a possible domestic violence suspension, and Cabrera is coming off a knee injury. Its something we want to be very careful with, Alderson said.Alderson noted young outfielders Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo were on Italys preliminary roster. Conforto was born in Seattle and Nimmo in Cheyenne, Wyoming. All the players whose names end in `O will be playing for Italy, Alderson quipped. Thats the key to a passport, as I understand it.Cheap Air Jordan 11 Australia .500 on the season. The Jets are now 0-5-1 in the second game of back-to-backs. Its the first meeting between the schools since 2010, before BYU left the Mountain West Conference to go independent.None of the players were around when the rivalry ended. Some of the coaches played in it, like BYU head coach Kalani Sitake, who was a running back for the Cougars in the 1990s, and offensive coordinator Ty Detmer, the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner while at BYU.Sitake said hes had to tell his players about the rivalry.I think its more for guys like myself that played in that game and Ty Detmer and a number of our coaches played against Wyoming, but this generation is different. You kind of have to teach them all and were dating ourselves when we talk about back when I played against Wyoming, Sitake said. But its also a cool experience to share and talk about players and places that have passionate fans.Cowboys coach Craig Bohl came to Wyoming after the rivalry ended.I do know this, a bunch of old guys who played college football come up to me in the hotel, and its a big deal to them, Bohl said. Here are some things to look for when the Cougars play the Cowboys:THE RIVALRY: These teams started playing each other in 1922 and were in a number of leagues together, most recently the Western Athletic Conference and the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars lead the series 44-30-3.COUGAR QB: Tanner Mangum will start for BYU after Taysom Hill strained his left elbow Nov. 26 in the season finale against Utah State. Mangum played in four games this yeaar, completing 14 of 18 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns.ddddddddddddSitake said Mangum has worn a headset on the sideline and listening to Detmer has been great for him maturing as a quarterback. I think now that hes had the opportunity to lead this team and this game with the unfortunate injury to Taysom, we will see what happens. I think he has a lot of skill and a little different than what Taysom does, but hopefully with what we have practiced and things we have implemented, its not like its a huge departure from what we do offensively.SAN DIEGO BOWLING: The Cougars also played in the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl, beating another former long-time rival, San Diego State, 23-6. The Cougars have played in San Diegos other bowl, the Holiday, 11 times.WYOMING POSTSEASON: This is Wyomings first bowl appearance since 2011, and the Cowboys have a 6-7 record in the postseason.POKES QB: Josh Allen was sacked four times and threw two interceptions in a loss to San Diego State in the MWC championship game. Bohl said Wyoming will have to do a better job against BYU, which has a stout defensive front. The Cowboys will have to do a better job of springing running back Brian Hill. He is the Cowboys career rushing leader, and he broke his single-season school record with 1,767 yards and 21 touchdowns. If youre able to run the football that opens up so many things and takes pressure off our quarterback. Thats going to be important, Bohl said.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
