KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs have traded backup running back Knile Davis to the Green Bay Packers, who desperately need to add depth to their injury-riddled backfield. The Packers gave up a conditional draft pick Tuesday for Davis, who has already started practicing with his new team. The Packers needed help at running back with Eddie Lacy nursing a bothersome ankle and James Starks undergoing knee surgery. Lacy was their only active running back against Dallas on Sunday, when he rushed for 65 yards on 17 carries in a 30-16 loss.Starks will be out a couple of weeks. Lacy was being held out of practice Wednesday because the ankle was very sore, coach Mike McCarthy said. That means the Packers will have to get Davis up to speed on the playbook quickly if hes going to be ready when the Chicago Bears visit Lambeau Field on Thursday night. Its obviously a big challenge when youre on a short week, but hes definitely a talented young player, McCarthy said. So just looking forward to getting him into the mix and get going.Top cornerback Sam Shields, who has been out since the season opener with a concussion, was placed on injured reserve to make room for Davis on the active roster. The Packers have been struggling in the passing game, and the injuries to Lacy and Starks have added to their issues on offense. McCarty got a look at Davis in Green Bays last preseason game, when he ran for 58 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries in the Chiefs 17-7 win on Sept. 1.Davis had been passed over by Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West on the Chiefs depth chart, and the return of Jamaal Charles from his knee injury made him expendable.I feel like Im off the reins, Davis said after practice Tuesday. Im just excited to be a part of Green Bay and do I can here. Hopefully my role is bigger. The Kansas City Star first reported the trade.Davis, the former Arkansas standout, was the Chiefs third-round pick in 2013. He was expected to team with Charles in a power-and-lightning backfield. But issues with fumbles that plagued him in college continued in the NFL, and he gradually lost playing time to other running backs. His best season was 2014, when he ran for 463 yards and six touchdowns. But hes only carried 29 times for 70 yards and a touchdown the past two seasons combined.Davis was a longshot to make the Kansas City roster out of training camp, but his special teams ability may have made the difference. Hes averaged 27.2 yards on kickoff returns during his four-year career, and returned three kicks for touchdowns. The fact that the Chiefs and Packers were trade partners is hardly surprising. Chiefs general manager John Dorsey played for the Packers in the 1980s, spent most of his career in their front office and rose to director of football operations before joining the Chiefs prior to the 2013 season.Davis was the third player he drafted in Kansas City.CHIEFS MOVESThe Davis deal was the start of a slew of roster moves on Tuesday for Kansas City. The Chiefs signed free agent defensive lineman Kendall Reyes, who was Washington for two games this season. He previously played four years in San Diego.Kansas City added cornerback Terrance Mitchell, defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches and linebacker Ramik Wilson from its practice squad.Defensive end Allen Bailey and linebacker Justin March-Lillard were placed on injured reserve. Last week, Boulware was called for a targeting penalty -- which was overturned on review -- on a shoulder-high hit on Boston College quarterback Patrick Bowles.Boulware worried his image has been skewed from tough-minded defender to cheap-shot artist.People are saying that Im like the most hated player in college football and Im dirty, Boulware said this week. People saying that are just jumping to conclusions.Boulware is a leader on a young defense ranked ninth in the country despite losing seven starters from last years ACC champions and national title runners up. The senior was taught to play the game fullout and wont dial it down for anyone. He said he was simply holding onto Jackson to prevent him from making a play. Were not playing golf or tennis, Boulware said. This is an aggressive sport. You can see that Im annoyed by it because its been blowing up the past two weeks.Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said theres nothing dirty about Boulware, except maybe that beard hes got.North Carolina State has relied on its strong defense this season to be the only other ACC Atlantic team without a league loss. The Wolfpack are eighth nationally and held Notre Dame to three points in soggy, 10-3 victory playing under Hurricane Matthews soaking rains.NC State coach Dave Doeren said the defense has steadily improved over his four seasons in charge and he believes his team is better equipped to challenge Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and the teams high-poweredd attack.dddddddddddd.You have to look at improvements weve had since Ive gotten here, he said. Every year weve gotten better on defense.---Some other things to look at when North Carolina State takes on No. 3 Clemson:HOME SUCCESS: Clemson has won a school record 19 straight games at home dating back to a 2013 loss to Florida State. The Tigers mark for not losing at home, though, is 25 where they went 23-0-2 during a stretch from 1980 to 1984.STOPPING THE RUN: The Wolfpacks rise in defense has come in part because of their success against the run. So far, North Carolina State is giving up just 91 yards a game on the ground. That will be tested this week as Clemson tailback Wayne Gallman ran for 109 yards on nine carries last week in a win over Boston College.HEALTHY RECIEVERS: Clemson coach Dabo Swinney expected star receiver Mike Williams to play against the Wolfpack after suffering a hamstring injury against Boston College. Swinney said Williams has looked good this week. The coach also said that injured Hunter Renfrow could return to face North Carolina State after missing the past four games with a broken bone in his hand.BOWL GAME: Since, 1981, the game between Clemson and North Carolina State has been called the Textile Bowl because of the industrys importance to both states and since the two schools have well-regarded textile programs.HUNDRED YARD GAMES: Clemson runner Wayne Gallman tied the school mark of Raymond Priester with his 15th game with 100 yards rushing in the win over Boston College. Gallman can set the record this week if he can break the century mark against Boston College. Gallman surpassed Priesters single-season rushing mark last year.---OnlineAP College Football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
