(STATS) -- The Southern Conferences two best teams will beat you in different ways. The Citadels bread and butter is its death-by-a-thousand-paper-cuts triple option while Chattanooga will spread things out, equally content to run or throw. The team thats lurking as the SoCons challenger to those contenders has an entirely different idea in mind: Take to the air and get down the field -- fast.Samford has been one of the most one-dimensional offenses in the country so far, but Devlin Hodges has been so good spreading the ball around that an almost complete lack of a running game hasnt hindered Chris Hatchers team. The offense, known as the Hatch Attack, is working thanks to its sophomore signal caller.Hodges took over midway through his redshirt freshman season in 2015 after starter Michael Eubank went down, and the results were promising right away. He tossed 11 touchdowns and three interceptions while starting the Bulldogs final five games, completing 70.4 percent of his throws while averaging a whopping 44.6 pass attempts and 345.4 yards per game. Throw in 303 rushing yards and it looked like Samford had a dual-threat QB for three years to come.He hasnt had nearly that success on the ground through the first four games of his sophomore season -- the Bulldogs are 118th of 125 FCS teams in yards per carry (2.5) and 121st in yards per game (68.0), but that hasnt held them back. Twelve of Samfords 20 scoring drives have taken less than two minutes, with four coming in a minute or less. The Hatch Attack mandate is simple: Get the ball to the talented receiving trio of Emmanuel Obajimi, Kelvin McKnight and Karel Hamilton and get out of the way. This offense is built for me, Hodges said last month. My job is to get the ball to the wide receivers as fast as I can and let them make plays. As long as I can get them the ball, Im confident that they are going to make plays and get yards after the catch. We have a great chemistry.Hodges has upped his completion percentage to an FCS-best 73.3, though thats perhaps not too surprising given the quick-release nature of the Bulldogs offense. His 10.37 yards per completion rank just 93rd of 114 qualifying QBs.There might be an opportunity to take some more shots downfield against Furman (0-5, 0-2). The Paladins have seen only 66 passes hit the air so far this season -- the next-lowest total in the FCS is Columbias 86, and the Lions have played three games -- but those throws have yielded a subdivision-high 11.32 yard per attempt. The bulk of the damage, though, has been done on the ground. Furmans opponents have averaged 46 carries per contest and 5.0 yards per tote -- maybe enough of a reason to believe theres hope yet for Samfords running game to get going. Should Hurricane Matthew dump a lot of rain on Greenville, South Carolina, prior to or during Saturdays contest, it may need to.I think we need to get better in all phases, especially in the running game, offensive coordinator Russ Callaway said Wednesday. We have to do a better job, out wide, of blocking. We have to do a better job of inside blocking. We have to do a better job with the running backs, the quarterbacks, really everybody. But, obviously, improvement in the running game would be huge for us.Furmans record looks unsightly, but the quality of the Paladins competition is hard to ignore. The were in a one-score game midway through the fourth quarter at Michigan State in the opener. They led at The Citadel until the final two minutes, lost by a touchdown to Chattanooga and were undone by turnovers and special teams at Coastal Carolina. Furmans worst performance came in last Saturdays 52-42 loss to option-heavy Kennesaw State -- the Paladins trailed 49-14 at the half -- but theyll be facing an entirely different type of offense this week.Theyve had a great deal of bad luck this season, Hatcher said.Samford lost both games against the SoCons resident powerhouses last season, and came up empty in its first test in this one, falling 41-21 at Chattanooga on Sept. 24. The Bulldogs schedule looks pretty manageable over the next few weeks before an Oct. 29 trip to Mississippi State, though. The big one lies a week later with a visit to The Citadel that could make or break Samfords shot at a playoff spot. But dont expect Samford to look past Furman. The Paladins came from 17-0 down at halftime to stun the Bulldogs 20-17 on Jon Croft Hollingsworths field goal as time expired last Oct. 31.You can never underestimate anyone, Samford defensive back Marquis McCullum said. Especially teams that have struggled early on in the season.Theyre always looking for that next opportunity to get them going to where they want to be.Fake Vans Free Shiping . The Jets are now 0-5-1 in the second game of back-to-backs. The game started the same way the Vancouver game started the night before, with the Jets taking the first two penalties of the game and killing off the first, but the Oilers getting on the board first, scoring on the second man-advantage.The 2016 Little League World Series was filled with big drama: a homer that lifted an ailing moms spirits, a heartfelt father-son handoff on the mound, festive and fun-loving fans. We asked some of the folks who had front-row seats for all the action -- on and off the field -- in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to weigh in with their favorite LLWS memories.A home run for momMy favorite moment of the 2016 LLWS has to be when I interviewed Iowa first baseman JT Garcias mom, Jen, who is battling pancreatic cancer. She made the trip to Williamsport in between her chemo treatments. As I was asking her about how the team has rallied around her, JT hit a home run to give his team a 4-1 lead over California. It was a magical moment that had the entire section in tears, including me. Believe it or not, its not the first time Ive been interviewing a family member as his or her son hit a home run. This was actually the third time! That said, given the circumstances and the emotion, this was definitely the most special of them all. Its a moment I will never forget, and I hope Jen wins her battle with this horrible disease. --Jaymee SireA game that translates in any languageMy favorite part of the LLWS was seeing how the game of baseball is taught and learned in a variety of ways all over the world. We can all remember how we first learned the game, and to see the development of these boys and girls gave me a real sense of how uniquely this beautiful game is translated in all parts of the world. Yet, many of the results are the same: getting your barrel to meet the ball, throwing a pitch to the outside corner and wearing the biggest grin on your face for no real reason other than you are 11 years old and playing a game that you love. I absolutely enjoyed getting to see and experience my first LLWS! -- Jessica MendozaAn unforgettable father-son exchangeMy favorite moment came during Mondays consolation game between Oregon and Italy. The Oregon coach, Joel Jensen, came out to talk to his pitcher -- who is also his son, Isaiah. Dad started the mound visit by saying, Hey, I love you. It was a touching moment that reminded me very much of coaching my own son, Corey. It was also a great way of cutting through the pressure that goes along with playing at the LLWS on ESPN and in front of a huge crowd. Jensens comment broke through the hoopla and was just a really cool father-and-son moment that Joel and Isaiah will be able to share for the rest of their lives.dddddddddddd -- Jay CrawfordMexicos festive fansThe spirit with which the team from Mexico plays is, in a word, fun. Yes, theyre a powerhouse, and yes, their bats have been hot. Their pitching is among the best here in Williamsport. Its clear: Beisbol courses through their veins. If they feel any pressure, it must be on the inside, because they make it look fun: from the sign the players made and hung in the dugout to remind them of how resilient they are, to the 38-hour drive half their family members took just to get to Williamsport, to the two fans who stand on the hill proudly holding the Mexican flag while their countrymen play. While there are actual brothers on the team -- Patricio and Victor Juarez -- these 14 boys and their coaches are a family. You cant not smile when youre around this team. --Marysol CastroYoure never too old to go over the hillSliding down the hill thats beyond the outfield fence at Lamade Stadium is a ritual unique to the Little League World Series. Kids grab cardboard, throw caution to the wind and slide down at warp speed. My favorite memory of this Little League World Series is not only seeing Tim Kurkjian show Jessica Mendoza how to slide -- and then watch her ignore his advice and go down headfirst twice -- but also witnessing the adventures of Dallas Braden. Dallas treated the cardboard as a skateboard and motored down before nearly meeting disaster, but then he deftly stole another kids cardboard to ride to safety and victory. This tournament is the Little League World Series, but that was a big league maneuver -- and a reminder to all of us to unleash our inner child whenever we can. --Adnan VirkThe kids are all rightMy favorite moment of the LLWS was having two kids from the Kentucky team, Devin Obee and John Guthrie, in the booth for an inning during a consolation game. The kids were remarkably poised, especially Guthrie, who explained, among other things, his interest in stock trading. Devin was very enlightening about being the son of a former NFL player, Terry Obee, and how his father has advised him not to play football until he gets older because its not necessary, or helpful, to play the game at age 12 or younger. We put the kids in a very difficult position, and they handled it beautifully. --Tim Kurkjian ' ' '
