NEW YORK -- NBC set up Friday as duel night between the United States and Jamaica in the sprint relays, and what started out well ended up in heartbreak for the Americans. The American women were working on a second chance in the 4x100-meter relay. Bumped off course in a heat Thursday, they were given another opportunity to qualify by running against a clock. They succeeded, but heard whispers that they didnt deserve that chance.I think they will come out with a lot of attitude, NBC analyst Ato Boldon predicted. He was right, and the U.S. team defended its gold medal with relative ease. Jamaica came in second. Before the men took the track, NBC aired a creative and prescient prepared report, handing the four American sprinters tablets to see video of flubs that had ruined previous races.Unfortunately, weve come to be defined by failure, said the teams coach, Dennis Mitchell. As they will again. Viewers knew it wasnt meant to be when the U.S. began the final lap essentially even with Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt, the worlds fastest man who was attempting to win his ninth gold medal. Nobody would catch him. Japan snuck in for the silver medal and the U.S. thought it earned bronze, but even that slipped from their grasp when they were disqualified for a faulty pass of the baton.HOLD ON: The admonition not to call a race over before it actually is should be the first thing track announcers learn, but NBCs Tim Hutchings apparently wasnt listening that day. About five minutes before the womens 5,000-meter race ended and with Ethiopias Almaz Ayana way ahead, Hutchings referenced the pack of runners behind her and said, its a difficult mindset to adopt, to realize that the gold medal is gone and youre racing for silver. Not so fast. Ayana faded and Kenyan teammates Vivian Cheruiyot and Hilla Onsando Obiri passed her.CLUELESS: Now that weve reached the point of memorizing most of the Olympic commercials, we feel safe offering our nomination for the most annoying. Its those General Electric ads with the clueless younger brother visiting his sister at work. Theyre painfully unfunny, and were at a loss to see how it makes viewers think good thoughts about the company.ARLO TIME: Done right, theres something lyrical about calling a soccer game, isnt there? Its a corner kick for Sweden in the dying embers of the game, said NBCs Arlo White as the minutes ticked away in Germanys 2-1 gold medal victory over Sweden in womens Olympic soccer on Friday. Sweet.VOLLEYBALL: Nice camera work in the US-Italy mens volleyball match showing three Americans laying themselves out simultaneously for the ball. It looked like some kind of coordinated diving exercise, NBC analyst Kevin Barnett said.RATINGS: Bolts gold-medal run on Thursday lifted NBCs ratings in the dying embers of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The Nielsen company said 21.7 million people watched the telecast. Adding in cable and streaming viewers, and NBC had 22.9 million people watching during the time slot. NBC had an identical number of viewers -- 22.9 million -- four years ago on the same night in London.---Follow David Bauder at twitter.com/dbauder. He likely cemented his spot Saturday night, showing off skills he never displayed in college or the pros. Kearse caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson and returned a kickoff 107 yards for a score and the Seahawks used big plays to rout the Denver Broncos 40-10 in a preseason game. Brandon Browner added a 106-yard fumble return for a touchdown, one of three turnovers forced by the Seahawks in the first half. Browner earlier forced a fumble and OBrien Schofield also had a forced fumble and recovery. Peyton Manning played the first 1 1/2 quarters and threw an 11-yard touchdown to Wes Welker, and Von Miller played briefly after missing his first training camp practice Thursday to consult with the unions lawyers over his appeal of his suspension. But those appearances were secondary for the Broncos. Starting defensive end Derek Wolfe was taken off the field on a stretcher after injuring his neck in the first quarter. Denver later saw starting right guard Louis Vasquez leave with a left knee injury. The Broncos already had lost centre Dan Koppen for the season with a torn ACL early in camp. Wolfe was hurt with 9 minutes left in the quarter and on Seattles first offensive drive while he was blocked on a running play in which the Seahawks Robert Turbin gained 8 yards. The Broncos said Wolfe was being evaluated for a cervical spine injury and had movement in all of his extremities. Denver coach John Fox said a CT scan showed no broken bones and the team said Wolfe was expected to fly on the team charter back to Denver tonight. Wolfe was initially cut on the play by Seattles Luke Willson. As Wolfe was getting back up, fullback Michael Robinson collided with Wolfe appearing to compress hiss head and neck.dddddddddddd Wolfe remained on the ground and appeared to be moving his legs initially, but medical personnel strapped him to a backboard and took him away in an ambulance. Kearse never returned kicks in college at Washington or last season in his limited time on the Seahawks active roster. But the return game is one question the Seahawks have yet to answer with Harvin out for quite a while following surgery. A year ago, Wilson was still fighting to earn the starting job. After getting two series last week against San Diego, Wilson played the entire first half and looked ready for the regular season. He finished 8 of 12 passing for 127 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Kearse to cap the Seahawks first drive and Sean McGrath juggled and caught a 3-yard TD from Wilson late in the first half. Manning appeared just as ready, with Denver rolling up more 209 offensive yards in the first half, mostly against Seattles starting defence and most of that coming from Manning. He finished 11 of 16 for 163 yards and his TD toss to Welker, but neither Ronnie Hillman (13 carries for 34 yards) nor Montee Ball (six carries, 28 yards) was able to establish much in the run game. And the turnovers led to Seattle making this one a blowout. Denver tight end Julius Thomas was stripped by Browner following a 20-yard completion in Seattle territory in the first quarter. Heath Farwell later caused Hillman to fumble as he tried to stretch across the goal line and Browner returned the fumble from deep in the end zone to put Seattle up 24-7. Late in the first half, Schofield was able to knock the ball out of quarterback Brock Osweilers hand and fall on the fumble. That led to Wilsons TD toss to McGrath and a 33-7 lead at halftime. Stephen Williams added a 39-yard TD catch in the second half for Seattle, his second long TD reception in two games.Cheap Jerseys [url=http://www.cheapauthenticnfljerseys.net/]s
